As a Black liberation organization, MLN believes that Black people deserve the chance to directly reconnect with their ancestral homeland and regain their cultural heritage and identity—a relationship that was deliberately severed by the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
To reconnect with our history—a key aspect of our overall healing justice work—we facilitate a return trip to West Africa for leaders from our network each year. Participants return as transformed people who are also more effective leaders in movement as well as better parents, caregivers and community members.
Through the Return & Reclaim experience we help participants heal from the original trauma of slavery and colonialism. Utilizing a somatic arc of transformation, we support people in confronting the legacy of slavery through visiting the slave dungeons and understanding their place in the origins of mass incarceration in America. Overall, the program builds our collective capacity of resilience through connection to culture, language and nature in Ghana.
